Configuring Power BI Gateway

Note:  The Power BI Gateway is only required if your UniverseBridge environment is not reachable from the external internet without the use of VPN.

This article assumes that you have already installed and registered a Power BI Gateway.

Once a UniverseBridge dataset has been published from the Power BI Desktop client to the Power BI Server, you will need tell Power BI that it must use a Gateway Data Source for the connection in order to refresh the data.

1) Go to the Settings for the dataset

2) Associate the dataset with a gateway data source

Click the "Use a data gateway" toggle, select your gateway, ensure that the "Maps to" dropdown field is populated with the correct data source, and click Apply.

Note:  If you haven't already configured the gateway to access your UniverseBridge environment, you will see a "Not configured correctly" warning and you will not be able to select the gateway.

You will first need to create a gateway data source and then associate it with the dataset per the instructions below.

You will only have to do this once.

3) Create a gateway data source

Click the arrow on the right to expand the gateway in order to see "Data sources included in this dataset"

Then click "Add to gateway"

After clicking on "Add to gateway" you will see this configuration screen.  You will need to make these changes:

  • Optional:  "Data Source Name" to something recognizable  (By default, this will be set to "New data source")
  • Mandatory:  In the "URL" field, delete the "?" character and everything after it.  This will allow the gateway data source to be used for all UniverseBridge connections, not just for a specific dataset.
  • Mandatory:  Check the box for "Skip Test Connection"
  • Click "Add" button to complete the data source configuration

4) Associate the dataset with a gateway data source

After clicking "Add", you will be taken back to the dataset configuration.  Now that a data source has been added to the gateway, you can now associate the dataset with the gateway data source.

Click the "Use a data gateway" toggle, select your gateway, ensure that the "Maps to" dropdown field is populated with the correct data source, and click Apply.
